The Buyer
Ramon Bilbao

Since its foundation in Haro, La Rioja, in 1924, Ramón Bilbao has travelled through a century of landscapes and vineyards, bringing new ideas to, and establishing key milestones in, the history of Spanish wine. Driven by an insatiable viticultural curiosity, Ramón Bilbao today makes red and white wines in both Rioja and Rueda, and will continue to pursue its vision of bold, boundary-breaking projects in the next hundred years, too.

Recognised as one of the most important wineries in Spain and among the 50 most admired wine brands in the world*, Ramón Bilbao seeks to modernise tradition while always keeping the value of its origins front of mind. The constant goal is wines with purity and sense of place.

Ramón Bilbao is also committed to promoting knowledge of Spanish wines around the world, establishing global educational initiatives including the Spanish Wine Academy and the Spanish Wine Master competition.

Rodolfo Bastida the highly acclaimed head winemaker at Ramón Bilbao

In 1999, Ramón Bilbao created the first ‘contemporary’ Rioja, Mirto, which became a real pioneer of the region’s ‘village’ wines. At the same time, head winemaker Rodolfo Bastida relaunched his traditional trio of Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva, working to highlight the wines’ fruit profiles in a more modern style. The last few years have seen the introduction of real innovations including the Viñedos de Altura Tempranillo / Garnacha blend, plus the Limite Norte & Sur duo which seek to highlight the diversity of Rioja’s viticultural boundaries and ‘forgotten’ varieties.

This thirst for exploration has, quite literally, taken Ramón Bilbao to new heights with high altitude plots of so much personality and character that they launched the Lalomba single vineyard project. With its own, dedicated white wine winery in Rueda, Ramón Bilbao is digging deep into everything this region has to offer with Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc, too.

Always seeking to go a step further and offer as complete and enriching a wine experience as possible, Ramón Bilbao’s eyes are always to the future, approaching it with openness and curiosity; a quest for excellence and discovery through wine.
