The Buyer

With over 160 years of history, Mentzendorff is one of the United Kingdom’s longest-established wine importers, building brands and servicing all sectors of the UK trade, with a strong focus on the on-trade.

The company was founded by Ludwig Mentzendorff who travelled to the United Kingdom in 1850 with the purpose of selling Mentzendorff Kummel liqueur in Great Britain. In 1857, he wrote in High German to Jacques Bollinger offering to be his Agent für England. On 9th January 1858 Jacques replied in the same language, accepting the offer and inviting Ludwig to Aÿ at Bollinger’s expense.

Ludwig represented Bollinger with great pride and was delighted when both Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales awarded the Champagne house their royal warrants in 1884 and 1885. Upon Ludwig’s death, his son, Stanley, appointed Harry J Newman to oversee the company. He was the man responsible for shaping the future of Bollinger Champagne and Mentzendorff with the introduction of Bollinger Special Cuvée in 1911, suggesting the concept, the name and the label design.

Over the years, Mentzendorff has steadily added to their portfolio, building around our leading shareholder brands, Champagne Bollinger and Taylor’s Port. The Mentzendorff portfolio today includes many of the world’s leading family owned wine estates, who are innovators and pioneers in their fields, including: Klein Constantia, Domaine Chanson, Ayala Champagne, Langlois-Chateau, Bodegas Roda, Bodegas La Horra, Fertuna, Anwilka, Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Tapanappa, Turkey Flat Vineyards, The Crossings, Bodegas Hidalgo-La Gitana, Henriques & Henriques, Fonseca & Croft Ports, Delamain Cognac and Mentzendorff Kummel.
