The London Spirits Competition stands out from its peers for three distinct reasons.

1 All drinks are tasted blind to determine their quality and ability to win a medal.
2 All products are then assessed for their value for money in their category.
3 How does it stand out on shelf, or on a back bar and does its design and packaging match up to the value, price and quality it offers.

Those are arguably the three biggest determining factors that the average consumer will also use to decide what spirits brands to choose, either in a retail store or whilst out in a bar or restaurant.

They are also the key criteria used by drinks professionals the world over use to drill down and pick out the products that buyers want on their drinks lists.

It’s why The London Spirits Competition only looks to work those professionals with direct buying experience when it comes to judging the awards. These are the individuals that know what it takes to succeed in the competitive world of spirits and if they are to receive a gold, silver or bronze medal they thoroughly deserve to do so.

The Judges

Here The Buyer can reveal who has been selected to take part in the judging for the 2023 competition. A who’s who of the spirits, bar, retail and drinks scene.

The London Spirits Competition judges are invited for their drinks experience and backgrounds.

All the judges get the chance to taste the products blind first, before then discovering the price, and seeing the bottle, design and packaging.

The London Spirits Competition only uses judges with direct buying or professional spirits experience.

The line-up of judges includes some of the biggest talents working in bars across London and around the UK.

The judging for London Spirits Competition is also a great opportunity for leading spirits and bar figures to network and keep up with each other.

Judging and scoring

The London Spirits Competition is based on a separate weighted score that is given for each of the three parts of the judging process. The quality score gets twice the weight. Each score is calculated with other judges for the same product on the judging panel to determine the final score from which individual prizes will be awarded.

Quality Score: marked out of 100

Value Score: marked out of 100

Package Score: marked out of 100.

There are then separate awards for each of the main spirits categories – gin, vodka, rum tequila etc.
