Judges comments
Eric Zweibel MS says it is a great opportunity to see what the latest trends are across both wines and spirits and what new products are looking for listings. He particularly likes the fact you get the chance to first taste the wines blind and then get to know how much it costs so you can see if the quality of offering the right value for money.

Beans Boughton agrees and says as buyers it is always important to judge the quality first blind. But the fact the competition then allows you to see the price and the packaging and design is a real bonus and point of difference. It is also in step with the consumer as the design is always the first thing they get to know about a wine.
Broughton says he was also pleased to see so many English wines taking part in the 2023 wine competition.
Ali Ali, bartender, praises the competition for being “well organised and speedy” and highlights the “attention to detail” and “great selection of judges” he has to work with.
Michele Lombardi, head mixologist at Four Seasons Hotel, says it is a great opportunity to taste and see products from all over the world that she might not normally come across – like in the 2023 competition spirits from Argentina and South Africa.
It is that opportunity to explore that Mouad Mochament, assistant bar manager at The Ned particularly likes as well as the chance to then discuss those produces with fellow judges. He was particularly impressed by the spirits he got to taste from Australia and New Zealand in the 2023 competition.
Gabor Molnar, head bartender, says it is a great opportunity to try and in the 2023 awards particularly liked the contemporary gins and tequilas.
It is the chance to network and spend time with fellow professionals that is most appealing to Matteo Torresin, bartender at the Dorchester, as well as the chance to test and refine his palate. He was pleased to see how many quality non-alcoholic spirits were entered in the 2023 competition.
