The matching of Domaine Zind Humbrecht, Alsace Grand Cru 2013 with Dorset Crab and Sashimi of Orkney Scallop was just one of the many highlights of the special event that highlighted Alsace Grand Cru.

The Harrow at Little Bedwyn hosted a celebration of Alsace Grand Cru wines on Sunday, highlighting the diversity of this region.

Eric Zwiebel MS, a native of Alsace, was on hand to guide the 70 guests through all the wines.

Also in attendance were two other celebrated sommeliers, Roman Bourger from The Vineyard Hotel at Stockcross and Remi Cousin from Le Gavroche.

The 70 tickets sold out in less than 24 hours when they were released in the Spring, highlighting the interest that consumers have for Alsace wines, especially when the list is so impressive. There were nearly 30 wines on show, which had been carefully chosen by Vins d’Alsace and included Cremant d’Alsace, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Auxerrois, Riesling, Muscat, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir.

The diverse and clever way that Alsace wines go with food was highlighted by the Michelin-starred menu that Roger Jones devised following the tasting.

This was especially showcased with the matching of Domaine Zind Humbrecht Alsace Grand Cru 2013 with Dorset Crab and Sashimi of Orkney Scallop.

Roger introduced his guests to a savoury Pinot Noir from Domaine Blanck 2014 matched to Cornish Turbot with Perigord Truffles and a Chicken & Cep Soup.

Again this wine showcased the value you can get from Alsace with this Pinot retailing at below £15.

Other star wines on show included magnums of Julien Schaal Rosacker Grand Cru Riesling 2015, Julien works two vintages every year, one in Alsace making Riesling and one in South Africa making a rather impressive Chardonnay.
