Greene King’s Andrew Ingham & his summer loves

So we’re into August, England are winning test matches, the sun is still shining and we’re all taking in turns to head off on holiday. In the first of a series of Q&As with leading figures in the trade we ask Greene King’s Andrew Ingham to kick things off by sharing what he’s up to this year along with what else he loves about the summer months.

When he’s not sorting out the wine lists for Greene King, Andrew Ingham will be spending this summer looking to catch up on old film classics, sipping white port and tonic and looking forward to buying a coat for the cold winter ahead.

Andrew Ingham: ready for the summer..

What are your plans for the summer holidays?

I’m taking a break in September and doing a home stay with a Japanese family in Nara, Japan.

How good are you at switching off holiday and staying away from work?

I would say that I am a black belt at this.

What are you most looking forward to doing when on holiday and having some spare time?

Meeting new people, eating great food, and making new friends.

Any books you looking to catch up on?

I’m reading Eeeee Eee Eeee by Tao Lin.

Any recent films you are looking to catch up on?

I’ll watch anything with Joaquin Phoenix in it and I still haven’t seen ‘You Were Never Really Here’ yet. I missed it at the cinema.

My fave film of all time is ‘Her’.

All time favourite film to watch when on summer holiday – or reminds you of being on summer holiday?

’24 Hour Party People’ is always a go to film for any occasion!

Favourite summer holiday music?

Single: ‘I’m a believer’, The Monkees.

Album:Beck, “Morning’.

Favourite music video that sums up summer holidays?

Can’t watch music videos!

Bucket list holiday destinations that you have not visited yet?

Columbia and Fiji!

What’s your favourite summer drink?

White port and tonic.

Favourite summer meal?

Fish Tacos.

Ideal place for a sun downer?

Journeys End, South Africa: the ideal place to see the sun go down…

I visited Journeys End winery in Stellenbosh and the view from the deck looking over the vineyard at Gordons Bay and towards False Bay was one of the winery highlights for me this year. Sometimes it’s nice to stop and take a moment to appreciate how lucky we are to do this job you know?

How has 2018 been so far for you?

Great! First full year in at Greene King, lots of positive changes, step change in range development. All exciting stuff.

Biggest or happiest achievement so far this year?

My son, Theo, making it to the final of the Nestlé Torque D’or apprentice chef competition. He’s a chef for Gordon Ramsay. Family beats work.

What are the biggest issues facing your business over the next 12 months?

The doors are open…just need to get people off their sofas!

Convincing people that being actually social in a pub with your friends and family is more rewarding than using social media, watching Netflix and drinking wine at home in silence.

What steps can you take to address them?

Make wine fun and get as far away from talking about ‘educating customers’ as possible.

What are you most looking forward to when the clocks go back and winter comes?

Buying a new coat. Every Manc loves a new coat.

You got a football or rugby team? What chances do you think they have next season?

I don’t understand sport at all. I’m from Manchester and one of those teams usually wins something I think.
