The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC) kicks off its Virtual Ceremony week with the announcement of the Best in Class winners that are awarded to the best performing wine from their respective category.
It has been another record breaking year for the CSWWC with over 1,000 Champagnes and sparkling wines entered into the competition from 30 countries around the world. It makes judging the awards harder every year as the quality and range of wines entered goes up every year too.
That job goes to awards founder Tom Stevenson, Essi Avellan MW, who has been with the competition since it started, George Markus, Hungary’s leading expert on Champagne and this year’s reserve judge chef and expert wine consultant, Roger Jones. Between them they have awarded 139 Gold and 268 Silver medals to producers in 19 countries.
Stevenson says seeing a marked increase each year in entries is vital to the success of the awards programme, this is not because he wants to simply increase the number of entries, but as he explains: “It is not only our mission to promote world class wines, but also to discover and reward new and exciting wines from established and emerging regions across the world, for example, we were particularly pleased to see entries from Japan this year with one producer winning a silver medal.”
He adds: “Last year was memorable for obvious reasons, but who could have imagined at the start of 2020 that we would still be battling a pandemic in 2021, even though we were even less sure of finding a single working vaccine. Yet we have attracted more than 1,000 entries of extraordinary quality into our niche competition for the second year running.”
